Opioids risks of Heart Rhythm

Opioids: Increases the risk of Heart Rhythm

Opioids are the substances that act upon opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. They are medically used for pain relief which includes anesthesia. They are a class of drugs which are naturally found in the opium poppy plant. With addition of controlling pain, opioids can also make some people feel relaxed, happy or “high,” and can be highly addictive.

As opioids are highly addictive they can also increase the risk of common heart disorders that can cause stroke. The impact of opioids that risks for an abnormal heart rhythm which is called as atrial fibrillation. Atrial Fibrillation is an irregular and rapid heart rate which increases the risk of  heart stroke and other serious complications. The Atrial fibrillation is a common condition which affects approx 6.1 million Americans. Since it increases drastically the risk for heart stroke, prevention is key. The reduction of opioids may help in the reduction of atrial fibrillation.
